Frequently Asked Questions
FAQs
How do I prepare for a neuropsychological evaluation?
You cannot prepare for the paper-and-pencil and other tasks which form part of the evaluation.
However, there are a few things you can do to assist you with your assessment, including:
- trying to get a good night’s sleep (given that being tired affects your thinking)
- eating a good breakfast
- trying to not drink any alcohol the night before the assessment
- bringing along glasses (if you wear them), a list of any prescribed medications, any brain imaging results and previous medical records you may have as well as any previous neuropsychological/psychological testing reports.
Overall, its important to relax, engage in the interview and testing to the best of your ability and to not worry about the results.
Will my employer obtain a copy of my results or report?
No – the only circumstances in which this may apply is if your employer has requested this evaluation (for example, for a fitness to work assessment). In such an instance, you would be made aware of the nature of such a referral and assessment prior to your appointment.
Your results and report are kept completely confidential, and the report will only be sent to those you have provided written consent for it to be sent to at the start of your assessment (e.g., to your referring medical practitioner). If anyone else ever requests a copy of your report (including long after your assessment has been completed), you will need to be contacted first in order to obtain your consent for them to be provided with a copy. The only exception to this, is if your report is the subject of a subpoena, and you will be notified that your information has been requested by the Court.
Are the results of my assessment confidential?
Yes – your results (i.e., test data) are stored and kept completely confidential. These can only be released to appropriately trained/qualified psychologists in line with recommendations and ethical guidelines by the Australian Psychological Society (APS). This is due to the high risk of misinterpretation by individuals not suitably trained in understanding and interpreting psychometric data. Some exceptions do apply. Please contact us to discuss.
What are the costs involved in a neuropsychological assessment?
Fees vary according to the type of referral and assessment as well as the time required. Unfortunately, neuropsychological assessment is not covered under Medicare. Some assessments may be at least partially covered by private health insurance, ICWA, private insurance companies involved in worker’s compensation claims or under the NDIS. Payment is due on the day of your last appointment. Please contact us for further information about fees.
Is there a cancellation or failure to attend fee?
Yes. Fees apply should a cancellation be made less that 48 hours prior to the scheduled appointment. These fees vary depending on the type of referral and who is paying for the assessment.
